Poem for the Fourth Sunday of Easter

Today’s poem is Sad Music by Roger McGough (b.1937). Click here to read the poem.

The first item on the news each day is the number who have died. It is
overwhelming. The circumstances of the deaths and the way that funerals
have to be just now are heart breaking. What do we do with all this grief?

“No words express the grief we feel” and yet this is just what the poet
attempts – to say something true about what he is feeling.

We must do this in our prayer. Tell it how it is to God. The Psalmists are good at just such honest lament.

Try for yourself this pattern that they use:

Call God in. Complain in detail about what is grieving you. Ask what you want God to do. Affirm your trust in God.
