Fluttering Signs of God’s Creation

A meditation for children by Gail Hatch

Gather the Family

Ask someone to read Jeremiah 32:17 “Ah, Sovereign Lord, you have made the heavens and the earth by your great power and outstretched arm. Nothing is too hard for you.”

Now invite the children to close their eyes while you say:  Listen to this poem with your imaginations while you wonder about the great care and attention to detail God must have taken when he created tiny hummingbirds.

Slowly and reverently read the poem Ruby Throat by Elinor Ann Walker, recently published at firstthings.com.

Invite children to open their eyes and ask:

—What details did you hear about hummingbirds in this poem?

—Do you think it brought God pleasure to create these tiny birds?

—How do you feel when you see a hummingbird?

Close by thanking God for these tiny miracles!

Here are a few videos about hummingbirds which I found to be particularly entertaining for children:

~Hummingbirds In Slow Motion (BBC Earth)

~Hummingbird Builds Tiny Nest (Nature)

~Interesting Facts for Kids (Mocomi)

A printable hummingbird image can be found on this link for those who would like to color.

Some children may also be inspired to create their own drawing, prayer or poem about hummingbirds. We’d love to see them if they do!
