Meditation with Psalm 60

Psalms in times of Uncertainty

Psalm 60:1-5

“You have rejected us, broken our defenses… You have shown your people desperate times; you have given us wine that makes us stagger”

Instability and “desperate times” are by no means a new phenomenon in the human experience, however as an American, these words feel heartbreakingly current.

“But for those who fear you, you have raised a banner to be unfurled against the bow. Save us and help us with your right hand, that those you love may be delivered.”

What do these words, which echo across millenia and civilizations have to say to us today?

What is the bow that threatens us?

Who are ‘those God loves’?

“You have been angry. Now restore us.”

May the restoration come with justice and peace for all.

Amen.

Grace and Peace.
