Contemplative at Home offers guided meditative prayer – space to slow down and listen to the truth that is being born out of God’s love for you today – drawing on Ignatian spirituality and at times, Lectio Divina.
In this episode we pray with Mark 12:28-34 – considering what Jesus sees at the heart of the law
One of the scribes came near and heard Jesus and some Sadducees disputing with one another, and seeing that Jesus answered them well, he asked him, “Which commandment is the first of all?” Jesus answered, “The first is, ‘Hear, O Israel: the Lord our God, the Lord is one; you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.’ The second is this, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.” Then the scribe said to him, “You are right, Teacher; …this is much more important than all whole burnt offerings and sacrifices.” When Jesus saw that he answered wisely, he said to him, “You are not far from the kingdom of God.” After that no one dared to ask him any question.
After that no one dared to ask him any question.
Can you sense of reverence that has settled on the group as they hear these two wise teachers agree on the deep, all-encompassing wisdom of love?
In his book The Ignatian Adventure (p168), Kevin OBrien SJ suggests that we reflect on this story with these questions:
- Have I seen such loving in my life?
- How do I resist loving or being loved?
May you be led more deeply into God’s law of love as you pray with this text.
Every blessing.
